baseball 3

Before getting to baseball 3 one might want to go to baseball and baseball 2 to get a general grasp of my baseball opinions. It is beyond my belief that the Expos would move to Washington ,which is only 40 miles away from Baltimore. The Washington market only has 4.1 million people. The Baltimore market has 2.2 million.Added up its 6.3 million. It is ridiculous that this area would have the same number of teams as the NYC area which has 15 million.

Once again baseball has not addressed any real plans for revenue sharing. This will only insure that teams like the KC Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates will consistently post losing records and eventually loss of fan interest. It's like playing a game of Monopoly in which the Yankees start with $5000 and the Royals with $750.An interesting form of revenue sharing would be for both the home and visiting teams to split the gate and TV money 50-50.One cannot have a Yankees-Royals baseball game without the Royals.

I've used adjusted OPS[on base + slugging ]as my main batting statistical category.Barry Bonds once again had an amazingly great year.Barry was just a little below his 2001 and 2002 seasons. His OPS was higher but so was the league OPS.It is amazing to be that Bonds batted fourth all season.SF only finished 2 games behind first place. If Bonds batted third that would give him 18 extra plate appearances over a 162 game season.Personally I would have hit him second. That would have given hm 36 extra plate appearances[at least 30 as he didn't play every game].Bonds would have reached base 7 more times than the average hitter with increased power. This manuever might have pushed SF to the pennant.Randy Johnson had a great year.Pedro Martinez, only a good year.It is possible that he has reached the waning years of his career.

The major discussion in baseball now is the steroid controversy. As of this writing,Jose Canseco has written a book about it.In the last 10 years ,there has been an increase in power by the majority of major leaguers.Whereas past shortstops like Maury Wills, Luis Aparicio, Mark Belanger and Ed Brinkman would seldom hit over 5HR in a season, now it is uncommon for a shortstop to hit less than 15 homers. It appears that the whole league may be juicing up.In the past weight training was looked down on by baseball players as it was thought to decrease flexibility. In the past, great players like Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle would play with the pain of a hangover. Now it appears many more players are taking the sport more seriously and trying to keep in the best possible shape.Without absolute proof,I would of  had to take the word of Mark McGwire over a trouble maker like Jose Canseco. However at a hearing which was all about the past,McGwire refused to talk about it.He was given every opportunity to say whether or not he took steroids. As for Mr. Bonds,it is hard for me to believe that he took steroids without knowing it.Bonds has been so amazing over the last 4 seasons that he has basically created his own league.Albert Pujols and Adrian Beltre had amazing years in 2004 but their overall production falls far behind Bonds. The difference between Bonds and Pujols is close to the difference between Pujols and the 100th best hitter in the majors.Bonds in adjusted OPS has now had the three best seasons in baseball history and ranks third behind Ruth and Ted Williams in lifetime adjusted OPS.I don't support putting asterisks over Bonds and McGwires HR records.Babe Ruth, through no fault of his own played in an era in which great black ballplayeres were not allowed in major league baseball.Maybe he should get an asterisk.

Now in a related sports subject,if one can remember the riot at the Pistons-Pacers game in Detroit,no player can go into the stands,no fan should go on the court. In fact fans must realize that it is only a sporting event.I was at a Nets-Celtics playoff game a couple of years ago. Some idiot was continually yelling to Ricky Pierce about his sexual preferences.I'm sure if he and Ricky were alone in a closed room, the fan wouldn't have  acted like a third grader.Thankfully security told the fan to chill out.I don't understand why some people just can't go and cheer their team on instead of acting like fools. If they can't handle their liquor they shouldn't drink in the first place. How do they drive home?IN conclusion Artest,Stephen Jackson and some fans should have been arrested. These idiots were throwing ice on the players as they were exiting. The opposing team is not Bin-Laden.It is a group of great athletes.

John Chaney,of Temple who ordered a player to hurt an opposing teams player should not be coaching anymore. In fact he contributed to an assault.
